Which mysteries are yet to be discovered by the human eye?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">The ICARUS project focuses on the small, the commonly hidden, <strong>microscopic lifeforms<\/strong>. The tiny organisms play an important role on our planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">The main protagonist of our work are the diatoms &#8211; microscopic algae which provide <strong>a majority of the oxygen<\/strong> we breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">Diatoms form <strong>tiny glass houses<\/strong> with pores so minute that they can interact with sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">We scale these diatom structures to <strong>meter large ice sculptures<\/strong>. And let them melt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\" id=\"about-icarus\"><strong>Melting Ice<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">The volatile nature of Ice Diatom Structures remind of the <strong>vulnerability of nature<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-ast-global-color-8-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">We draw awareness for <strong>sustainable use of the Ocean<\/strong> and for the protection of biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\" id=\"about-icarus\"><strong>ICARUS<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">The project draws awareness for the microscopic wonders hidden in our environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">The project uses a combination of <strong>public science dissemination<\/strong> events including art installations to engage with the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\">We scale the microscopic diatom glass shells to large ice sculptures to make them visible to the naked eye.
